M3U List or Xtream Codes? The Difference, and Which One to Use

M3U or Xtream Codes: the difference

When you sign up with an IPTV provider, you usually get two ways to log in: an M3U link and Xtream Codes details. Both give you the same channels, so why two options? And which should you choose in your app?

This guide explains the difference in plain language, compares the two point by point and tells you when to use which.

What is an M3U list?

An M3U list is a playlist: a text file, usually delivered as a link, with a line for every channel. Each line contains the channel name, its group (for example "Netherlands | Sport") and the address of the stream. Your app downloads the list and shows the channels.

M3U is an old, simple standard. That's its strength: almost every IPTV app, media player and smart TV app understands it, from TiviMate to VLC.

What is Xtream Codes?

Xtream Codes is a login method. Instead of a single file, you enter three details:

  • Server address (URL)
  • Username
  • Password

The app then asks the server for live channels, films, series and the TV guide separately. Because the app talks to the server, it can load things on demand and keep them up to date.

Side by side

  • Live channels: both give you exactly the same channels.
  • TV guide (EPG): with M3U you often add a separate EPG link; with Xtream Codes the guide usually loads automatically.
  • Films and series: with M3U they're sometimes mixed in with the channels; with Xtream Codes they're neatly split into films and series.
  • Catch-up: with M3U it depends on the app; with Xtream Codes it's usually supported.
  • Updates: with M3U you reload the list; Xtream Codes updates automatically.
  • Very large lists: M3U can be slow on older TVs; Xtream Codes is usually quicker.
  • App support: M3U works in almost every app; Xtream Codes works in most IPTV apps.

When to choose which

  • Choose Xtream Codes in apps that support it, such as TiviMate, IPTV Smarters, OTT Navigator and MyTVOnline. You get the TV guide, films and series in tidy menus without extra steps.
  • Choose M3U in apps that only accept a playlist, such as VLC, Kodi's PVR IPTV Simple Client and some Smart TV apps. Add the EPG link separately for a working guide.

Many M3U links contain your Xtream Codes details. A typical link looks like this:

http://server-address:port/get.php?username=USER&password=PASS&type=m3u_plus

  • The part before "/get.php" is your server address.
  • The value after "username=" is your username.
  • The value after "password=" is your password.

That's handy if you only saved the link. Keep it private: anyone with the link can use your subscription.

Common problems

The list loads, but there's no TV guide

With M3U, add the EPG link in your app's settings. With Xtream Codes, refresh the EPG in the app and check the EPG time offset if times are wrong.

The app is slow with a huge list

Switch to Xtream Codes if your app supports it, or hide channel groups you never watch.

"Invalid playlist" or "unable to load"

Check that you copied the full link, without spaces at the start or end. Paste it into a phone browser: if it downloads a file, the link works and the issue is in the app.

Common questions

Do M3U and Xtream Codes give different channels?

No. Both give you the same subscription. The only difference is how your app loads and organises it.

Can I use both at once?

You can add both in different apps. They count as connections to the same subscription, so check how many screens your plan includes.

Which is safer?

Both contain your login. Treat the link and the details like a password and never share them.
